The Gift in the Interruption

“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
John 4:10 NIV

A day can start with a list already forming in our heads. Get the coffee, answer the message, make the appointment, stop at the store, finish the thing that did not get done yesterday. Most of it feels ordinary enough that we move through it already knowing what the day is supposed to hold. Yet sometimes, right in the middle of what seemed settled, something unexpected interrupts our certainty and brings within reach a possibility we had almost stopped taking seriously.

A Samaritan woman came to a well for water. Jesus, a Jewish man she did not know, asked her for a drink. She was surprised and asked, “How can you ask me for a drink?” Then Jesus widened the conversation. “If you knew the gift of God…” He spoke of living water. She answered, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water” (John 4:9–10, 15 NIV). She knew the relief she wanted. At first, she heard His offer as an end to thirst and having to keep coming back to the well. Could His offer reach beyond relief and begin to change what she had come to expect?

The conversation soon went beyond water. Jesus began talking about the life she was living, and her questions grew with the conversation. Soon she was asking about worship. Then she spoke of her hope that the Messiah would come and “explain everything to us” (John 4:19–25 NIV). We know how that can happen. We may start by asking for one thing, then an unexpected word or conversation makes us wonder if there is more we might want than we first realized. Her desire has not disappeared. It is growing as Jesus gives her more to see.

Her own words let us hear the change. At the well she had said, “Sir, give me this water…” Later she leaves her jar, goes back to town, and says, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:15, 28–29 NIV). She began with “give me” and moved toward “come, see.” Could an interruption that makes no sense at first still hold a gift? Jesus met her in a desire she already understood and showed her more than she had expected to find. What if what we want today is real but unfinished, whether it is relief, a chance, recognition, or a way forward? What possibilities might Jesus open our eyes to today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, interrupt me today with more than I know to ask for. Open my eyes to possibilities I cannot yet see clearly, and let my desire grow as You show me more. Amen.
