More Life Today

“We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV

We may carry a deep desire to use our abilities in work that matters, without yet knowing where that desire may lead. Then a community project needs help. We come intending to stay an hour, but soon we are organizing supplies, noticing who needs a hand, and meeting new people. Practical and relational capacity are both growing almost unnoticed. What we still hope for has not disappeared, but now we're connecting with people and finding ways to work together. And without settling what lies ahead, we discover that trust, love, and hope are already opening up more life before us.

The people who first received these words were a young Christian community in Thessalonica. Later, Scripture points to one man whose faith and actions were “working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did” (James 2:22). Love was costing them something, but hope was giving them strength to continue. Might that same pattern show up when we choose to work side by side, help each other, and get to know one another? We may still not know what lies ahead, yet we are already growing in how we work, love, and stay with what matters.

Centuries earlier, people from Judah were living in captivity far from the place their hearts ached to return to. Yet they were told to “build houses and settle down; plant gardens” and to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city” where they were living (Jeremiah 29:5, 7). They were not being told to stop wanting to go back. But as they built, planted, and worked for the good of the very city that had taken them captive, their longing began to include even more. Our circumstances may be very different, yet one longing can slowly push the rest of life aside. Faith, love, and hope can keep desire alive without pausing the rest of life. Faith gives desire a way to act. Love widens who and what it includes. Hope gives it time.

At first, this can look like ordinary growth as we help, connect, and stay with what matters. Then Scripture opens a deeper possibility with the words “until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19). Faith, love, and hope may be more than qualities we build. Could they be signs of the life of Christ taking shape in us? We begin to see it in how we treat people, what we give, and how we respond. “Faith expressing itself through love” (Galatians 5:6) becomes something others can experience through us too. So while we still carry what we long for, what is Jesus already bringing to life in us today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, while I carry what I long for, form Your life in me. Let faith move me to act, love reach others through me, and hope stay alive as I walk with You today. Amen.
