When the Delay Starts to Speak

A delay can acquire a voice of its own. At first it seems to say only, “Not yet.” Given enough time, it can begin sounding like “probably not,” or even “never.” An unchanged relationship, an opportunity that never opens, or a hope that keeps moving farther into the future can start trying to tell us what the waiting means. Or, just as strangely, a strong desire can speak with equal confidence in the other direction, trying to convince us that wanting something this deeply must mean it will happen. Nothing may actually have settled what will happen, yet somewhere along the way, the waiting has begun to sound like a verdict.
Maybe the proverb feels so honest because it does not rush past what the heart is feeling. The hope has been delayed, and the heart feels the cost. That much is real. Yet the proverb does not tell us what the waiting means. Another Scripture places a quiet boundary around that pain. “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow” (James 4:14). The ache can reveal how much this matters without claiming to know what comes next.
But Scripture does not treat desire as something separate from life with God. “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4 NIV). That does not make every desire a promise, but it does mean we can be honest with God about what we long for. When the outcome is still unknown, these words remain sure, “God is faithful” (1 Corinthians 1:9 NIV). We may not know what waits ahead, but God’s faithfulness carries us forward. “The LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” (Psalm 100:5 NIV). Whatever becomes of the longing, His goodness and love will meet us there. And if fulfillment is part of what we find, perhaps the proverb itself says enough. “A longing fulfilled is a tree of life”.
Prayer
Faithful God, teach me to carry desire without demanding certainty. Give me peace today with what remains unfinished, and help me walk into tomorrow knowing You are already there with me. Amen. ---
