The Stop You Didn’t Plan

"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." - Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

You are on a familiar stretch of road, one you have traveled enough times that you no longer think about each turn, when you encounter a barrier across the lane. There is no warning and no detour. You sit there with your hands on the wheel, and the frustration you expected doesn’t fully come. Instead, your shoulders ease and your grip loosens, and something inside you settles where you expected tension to rise. The direction you were certain about is not available, and what stands out isn’t the stop itself, but the stillness within you when it happened.

Paul, one of the earliest followers of Jesus, faced a moment like this while traveling with a small team through central Turkey. He had given his life to carrying a message, and Asia was next. Then they were “kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia,” Acts 16:6. He turned toward another route north, toward Bithynia, but again the way closed, and “the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to,” Acts 16:7. Two thoughtful plans, both stopped, and no word of explanation. If you’ve ever watched something you planned carefully come to a stop without a reason you can see, you know what that feels like.

Paul didn’t force that direction a third time. He continued west to a port town called Troas, and that night a man from Macedonia appeared in a vision and said, “Come over to Macedonia and help us,” Acts 16:9. Those stops didn’t end Paul’s mission. They redirected it toward people he had not planned to reach. The plan you trusted was real, but it wasn’t the whole picture. What opens next becomes clear once you release what closed. Jeremiah understood this when he wrote, “…it is not for them to direct their steps,” Jeremiah 10:23.

“…the LORD establishes their steps,” Proverbs 16:9. Those words don’t correct the plan but name what was already happening. Your plan wasn’t wrong, but God, who sees where the whole road leads, opened a direction you would not have chosen on your own.

Something you planned has come to a stop, and you are standing in the middle of it this morning. Jesus told a friend who could not make sense of what was happening, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand,” John 13:7. You don’t have to understand the stop to trust who is guiding it. Notice what changed inside you when your plans grew quiet. That shift is where the next step begins.

Prayer

Father, we planned with what we could see, and things went quiet. Thank You that the stop was not an ending. Give us eyes today to notice what is opening rather than what has shut, and the trust to follow where You are leading. Amen.
