The Life That Was Already Yours

Key Scripture: "...We will come to him and make our home with him." - John 14:23 NIV

What's different about how you stepped into this week compared to six months ago? Something inside you may have shifted. The worry that used to meet you before your feet hit the floor, is it still shaping your mornings? If the grip has loosened, you did not loosen it. Maybe that's part of what you've been noticing without having words for it yet. Jesus told His friends what was happening, "...We will come to him and make our home with him" (John 14:23). Not Someone who disappears the moment life gets hard again. More like Someone staying.

The conversation you used to replay for days, did you notice you stopped? The forgiveness that arrived before you knew what to do with it, where did that come from? Paul described it when he wrote, "...it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose" (Philippians 2:13). Maybe even that desire to forgive didn't begin with you. It may have started long before you noticed. Jesus once produced it in a tax collector named Zacchaeus, a man who had cheated his neighbors for years. He was too short to see over the crowd the day Jesus came through his town, so he climbed a tree just hoping for a glimpse. He never expected Jesus to stop, look up, and call him by name, "...I must stay at your house today" (Luke 19:5). Zacchaeus came down a changed man and repaid every debt he owed, not because he deserved the encounter, but because Jesus had already decided to stay, "...Today salvation has come to this house" (Luke 19:9), as it still does wherever He is welcomed.

There is something about people who walk with Jesus. Something deeper than personality changes in them. Paul prayed that "...Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith" (Ephesians 3:17), the very home Jesus promised when He said God would move in and never leave. And what comes with His presence there is more than comfort, "...the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you" (Romans 8:11). Still with you when you wake. Still with you in an ordinary afternoon that used to feel hollow. That quiet peace was not something you built. It was already living inside your ordinary days.

"...Who dares despise the day of small things?" (Zechariah 4:10). God does not despise them. Those ordinary days may be exactly where patience, forgiveness, and steadiness first start showing up in you. "...In him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17). His presence was there before you had eyes to see it. He was already in it.

Prayer

Father, we didn't see Your hand at first. You were home in our lives before we checked, already working before we asked. Thank You for dwelling where we forgot to look. Keep opening our eyes to where You've already been and where You're going next. Amen.
