Remaining in the Vine

"If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you." — John 15:7 (NIV)

Something happens in the first hour of the morning that is easy to miss. The day begins quietly enough. There is a moment of stillness, maybe even a prayer. Then the phone is in your hand. Or the first decision is already waiting. Someone needs something before you have found your footing, and without choosing it, you are already moving through the morning the way you always have, from your own strength, by reflex. No conscious departure. No moment of resistance. The drift happens the way water moves downhill, naturally, before you notice, because that has always been the path.

This is where the picture of the vine and its branches can feel, honestly, more like a beautiful idea than a livable one. A life Jesus longed to share, yes, a connection deeper than any discipline could produce, yes. But the first irritation of the morning does not pause to let you remember it. The question the heart carries is not whether the vine is real. The question is whether there is a genuinely practical way to begin living this. Not a concept to admire, not a teaching to store. A door.

Jesus did not leave that question unanswered. "If you remain in me and my words remain in you..." (John 15:7). He did not ask us to create that connection. He said to remain where His life is already speaking. Later He said, "I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you." (John 14:20). That is not a distant picture to understand from the outside looking in. It is a shared life, already opened to us. The question is not whether that life is there. The question is whether the next ordinary moment will be lived from it.

It becomes surprisingly practical when one ordinary moment already waiting today comes to mind. The conversation you have been quietly dreading. The interruption that usually pulls you sideways. The decision that arrives before you feel ready. Before it comes, settle one thing with Him beforehand. When that moment comes, it will not belong to the old reflex. It will belong to the life that is already yours in Him. Not a reminder to carry yourself. Not a performance to manage. A quiet agreement made before the pressure arrives. You will not need to invent a new response when the moment comes. You will simply keep what you have already settled with Him.

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love." (John 15:9). This is why that quiet agreement can hold. Not because of your resolve, and not because you can carry yourself through it. Rather, because His love is already present before the phone is in your hand, before the first answer is needed, before the old path begins pulling again. The vine does not ask the branch to produce life. It carries it. So step into today's ordinary moments from the life that is already yours in Him.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for a life that begins before we understand it and continues even when we forget it. Teach us to live from what is already given. Keep us close. Amen.
