"Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" — Galatians 5:25 (NIV)
Yesterday gave you something to work with. Maybe no one else would have noticed it, but you did. One ordinary moment went differently than it usually does. You were steadier. Less pulled around. More able to stop before the old reaction took over. Once you have seen that happen, even once, it is hard to write it off as positive thinking. Something real met you there, and it changes the way you come to a new day.
"Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25, NIV). Maybe that is why the verse feels so steady. It begins with a life already underway, not one you are trying to create before breakfast. Yesterday was not a lucky exception. It was a reminder that you are not starting from scratch this morning.
Of course, there will still be moments that try to pull the day in the old direction. A craving. An irritation. A conversation that starts to turn sharper than it needs to. And the hard part is not always the moment itself, but how quickly it starts reaching for the next one. But "his compassions never fail. They are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22–23, NIV). New enough that one hard moment does not get to tell the rest of the day what it will become.
Maybe that is the thing to remember when the day gets moving. You do not have to give that moment more ground than it deserves. You can stop sooner. You can turn back sooner. "Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again" (Proverbs 24:16, NIV). Sometimes that rising is almost small enough to miss. It looks like catching yourself before the irritation spreads. It looks like not letting one disappointment name the next hour. It may even look like noticing the pull sooner than you used to, which is its own kind of evidence that something in you is changing.
That may be how the path under your feet gets firmer, not all at once, but one ordinary moment at a time. Yesterday's small victory becomes part of today's strength. So when the next hard moment comes, maybe you will meet it a little sooner, with a little less fear, because you already know the day is not lost when you catch yourself and turn back. The ground has already shifted under your feet, and every return makes it a little more solid.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you that your life in me does not hang on perfect steps. When I drift, meet me there. Remind me what I already know, and walk this next step with me.
