Not Who You Were Yesterday

You’ve been asking God to close the distance in your marriage, and one evening you’re both in the kitchen laughing at something small and you realize it’s already happening. You’ve been praying for patience with a parent whose health is changing, and one morning you hear your own voice, steady and kind, and you know you didn’t rehearse that. You asked to be more present with your kids, and yesterday you caught yourself on the floor with them, fully there, with no pull toward your phone. There was no announcement. It just showed up wearing your voice, your hands, your attention.

Through the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke to a displaced people during the Babylonian exile, God made a promise that went past effort. “...I will give them a heart to know me,” Jeremiah 24:7. He would give them the heart itself, not something they had to earn. John Newton, the former slave-ship captain who wrote “Amazing Grace,” said it at 82. “I remember two things, that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior.” He didn’t take credit. He just knew he hadn’t built it. The kindness that came out of you unplanned, the forgiveness that arrived before you decided to offer it, Paul told believers in Rome that “...our old self was crucified with him,” Romans 6:6. Not retrained. Replaced.

You couldn’t have produced any of that a year ago. You would’ve been grinding through it, managing every word and response. But this time you didn’t try, and it was better than anything you ever built on your own. Paul wrote to believers in Colossae, a city in what is now Turkey, “...you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God,” Colossians 3:3. You’ve already seen what that looks like. The version of you that had to control everything, that ran on effort and willpower, that version reached the end of what it could do. And when you stopped being the source, the life God placed in you started showing up in its place.

Bring that into this morning. The conversation you’ll have over lunch. The tension that will surface at work. The moment your kid looks at you and needs something you don’t feel equipped to give. None of that depends on what you can produce. Paul called believers “...God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,” Ephesians 2:10. Those were set before you woke up. This was always a gift, not a reward for getting it right. You didn’t build this, but it fits. Now go.

Prayer

Father, You gave us a heart we didn’t earn. Thank You for answers we didn’t manufacture. Teach us to trust what You placed in us today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
