More Than I Could See

“…your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight… so that you may be able to discern what is best…”
Philippians 1:9 NIV

Something we already value can become richer as we begin to see more of it. A friendship deepens when a conversation reveals something we had never known. A familiar place looks different when we notice a path or scenic view we had walked past for years. Even a long-held aspiration can feel different when a new possibility comes into view that we had not considered. The facts around us may be the same, but seeing more can change what we thought we understood.

Paul, an early Christian leader, prayed for the believers in Philippi that their “love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight” so they would be “able to discern what is best” (Philippians 1:9–10). This is not warm feelings alone. Could what Paul describes grow in understanding and wisdom, opening a clearer way of seeing? Sometimes what once felt settled no longer seems quite as complete, and we begin to sense that one possibility may make more sense than another.

Paul writes elsewhere, “Christ’s love compels us” (2 Corinthians 5:14). There is movement in that word. The circumstances may be unchanged, yet a response we could not imagine before begins to feel possible. Could Christ’s love be enlarging the life from which we are able to choose?

Another prayer asks that God would “strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being” (Ephesians 3:16). What if the deepest change is not simply that more possibilities come into view, but that there is more life in us to meet them? Though the circumstances may still be what they are, might we find ourselves listening longer, receiving what once felt difficult, or imagining something we had stopped considering?

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17). Perhaps we first notice that freedom in small changes within us. What once seemed closed starts to open. What once felt beyond us is no longer completely out of reach. The horizon may not have moved, but to our amazement, something within us has. Jesus may be opening more life within us before anything around us changes.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open more life within me. Deepen my understanding, strengthen me by Your Spirit, and free me to receive what You show me without demanding to know first where You will lead. Amen.
