Guided in the Choosing

A job can look right on paper and feel different across the interview table. The same can happen on a first date, in a volunteer role, or during a conversation we have postponed. We can pray, ask questions, and think carefully, yet some things remain unknowable until we enter them. One conversation may answer one question and uncover another we never knew to ask. One choice can reveal what we could not see before. That does not make the first choice final. It may simply show us what the next faithful choice could be. What if God sometimes guides us that way?

Paul, a former persecutor of Jesus' followers, later became a missionary himself. On one journey, he and his companions planned to go to Asia, were stopped by the Holy Spirit, then tried another route, and after being redirected reached Troas. Could it be that clarity grows as we choose, adjust, listen, and keep moving? There Paul saw a vision pointing toward Macedonia. Luke writes, “we got ready at once,” “concluding that God had called us” there (Acts 16:10). By then, they could see more than when they started.

The Bible’s opening story widens this further. God placed the first man in the garden, gave him work and boundaries, then brought the animals to him “to see what he would call them” (Genesis 2:19). God gave him room to decide what to call them. Could dependence on God have included human judgment from the beginning? If so, perhaps being led by God was never meant to erase initiative, thought, or participation.

The letter to the Hebrews looks back at what God intended for humanity and admits we do not yet see it fully realized. Yet “we do see Jesus” (Hebrews 2:8–9). Paul describes “the new self” as “being renewed… in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:10). That opens another possibility. As Christ renews us, could He also be restoring our freedom to think, choose, and participate with God? Perhaps that kind of renewal includes learning to choose while still yielding to His lead.

Years later, at Ephesus, “all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord” (Acts 19:10). The way into Asia had once been closed to Paul, but not forever. From that place, his earlier change of direction now looks different, and what he learned along the way was not lost. Looking back, we may see more than we saw then. What if a choice we make today helps us see what matters, even when what comes next is not what we expected?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep me close to You as I pray, listen, and choose. Renew my judgment and help me participate with You, trusting that Your guidance can continue through what I choose and wherever You redirect me. Amen.
