You Matter More Than You Think

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” (Genesis 1:27, NIV)

You may not feel “spiritual.” You may not even be sure what you believe. But the Bible starts with a claim you can’t shrug off: your life is not an accident. God made people in His image. That means every human life carries a built-in worth that doesn’t rise and fall with performance, popularity, or failure.

God says this worth is so real that it shapes how we must treat one another: “for in the image of God has God made mankind” (Genesis 9:6). In other words, human life is sacred because it reflects God—whether someone recognizes that or not.

That truth also explains why evil feels personal. There is an enemy who hates God, and he cannot strike God directly—so he aims at what reflects Him. He works to twist what God made, to dull what is good, to stain what is clean, and to silence what is true. What Satan cannot destroy in God, he seeks to corrupt and disfigure in those who bear God’s image.

This is why pressure is rarely just about behavior. It is about worship—about who owns your loyalty and shapes your life. Revelation shows a system that demands allegiance and uses fear to force it: it is given power to attack God’s people (Revelation 13:7), and it squeezes ordinary life so people feel they must comply to survive: “so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark” (Revelation 13:17). That is what counterfeit power does—it tries to remake people through fear.

But Zechariah shows what God does in response. He doesn’t merely tell His people to “try harder.” He promises His own presence as protection and identity: “I… will be a wall of fire around it… and I will be its glory within” (Zechariah 2:5). God doesn’t just guard you from the outside—He intends to put His glory within you.

And when you feel unclean, ashamed, or disqualified, God’s answer is not to crush you. Zechariah gives a picture of someone standing exposed—and God moves first: “Take off his filthy clothes… See, I have taken away your sin” (Zechariah 3:4). That is not self-help. That is mercy and cleansing.

This is the heart of the gospel: God does not abandon His image in you. He restores it. He renews people into what they were meant to be: “being renewed… in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:10). Jesus doesn’t just improve you; He remakes you.

So today, if you feel pressured to compromise, numb, or shrink your hope, don’t treat that as your true identity. Come back to the One who made you. “Be still before the LORD” (Zechariah 2:13). Let Him speak first. Let Him cleanse what you can’t fix. Let Him protect what the world keeps trying to claim. You are not disposable. You are contested—because you were created to reflect God.

Prayer

God, thank You that my life is not an accident. If You made me in Your image, then my worth doesn’t depend on what I can prove. Protect me where I feel pressured. Cleanse me where I feel ashamed. Rescue me from fear-based compromise, and renew Your likeness in me today through Jesus. Amen.
