Where God Was Already Working

Key Scripture: "...Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." - John 4:35 NIV

Have you noticed what has been happening to the people around you lately? Not to you, but to them. The friend who called last week and wanted to talk about something deeper than usual. The family member whose temper has been quieter than it was six months ago and nobody quite knows why. The coworker who started asking questions about God unexpectedly, and then you found out someone had been praying for them for years without telling anyone.

Something is happening in the lives near yours, and you arrived in the middle of it. Jesus once pointed to a crowd of people walking toward Him from a nearby town and told His disciples, "...open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest" (John 4:35). A woman from that town had just left a conversation with Him and gone back to tell her neighbors. The disciples had been focused on their own concerns the whole time. And Jesus wasn't scolding them. He was inviting them to look up and see what God had already set in motion.

Maybe you have started noticing something similar. Not because you were searching for it, but because once you see it, you cannot look away. God seems to be doing things in people you know, things you did not plan and could not have produced. Paul wrote to the early church that, "...neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow" (1 Corinthians 3:7). And maybe there is something freeing about that. The growing was never your responsibility. The harvest was already forming before you knew it was there. Jesus said, "...The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few" (Matthew 9:37). The harvest already existed. The invitation was simply to walk into it. People near you may already be part of what God is doing.

Paul also wrote that we are, "...God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). Not invented by us, not dependent on our timing. The psalmist wrote, "...Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain" (Psalm 127:1). Maybe that changes the question we carry into this week. Not "what is God's purpose for our lives?" but "where is God already moving, and what would it look like to join Him there?" The phone call we almost didn't answer. The person who keeps appearing in our week. The conversation that feels like it wants to go deeper. Those may not be accidents. They may be invitations into something God was already building. This is new life!

Prayer

God, You were already moving long before we noticed. Thank You for letting us see it. Show us where to join You today, and give us the willingness to walk into what You have already begun. Amen.
