When the Road Has No Explanation

Key Scripture: "...Their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing." - Joshua 3:15-16 NIV

You are sitting on the edge of a dive boat with your mask on and a tank on your back, looking at water you cannot see through. You trained for this. You studied the depths and practiced the signals. But the ocean beneath you, dark and open, is different from anything a classroom could teach. Your dive master signals you forward. His calm authority settles you in a way preparation cannot. You can't see what waits below. But you trust the one who can.

You are not the first person to step forward before the reason was clear. Priests in ancient Israel stood beside a flooded river, and God told them to walk in before He moved the water. "...Their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing" (Joshua 3:15-16). You have probably felt this before, when you had to move without certainty. Abraham, one of the Bible's earliest figures, faced something even harder. God told him to sacrifice his only son on a mountain. "...Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey" (Genesis 22:3). God provided a sacrifice and spared the boy, but Abraham walked three days before he saw what God would do. Abraham kept walking because he had watched God prove faithful for decades.

You may recognize that feeling in your own life. God gives direction, but the explanation doesn't always come right away. The space between God's instruction and God's reason can feel lonely, but God has not left you there alone. King David wrote about waiting on God in one of his psalms, "...my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him" (Psalm 62:5). You may not need the full picture before peace begins to settle in again, especially when God was already working before you saw it. Paul once wrote to a young church, "...we live by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7), and God said through the prophet Isaiah, "...my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways" (Isaiah 55:8). The strange part is that God seems to remain close even before the reasons become clear.

You may be moving forward right now without seeing where God is leading you or why. The confusion may still be there, but God keeps showing up in the middle of it. Somehow the trust you needed was already there before you reached for it. Proverbs says, "...and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:6). God is building a path beneath your feet as you keep moving. The One beside you has already proven faithful. You are known.

Prayer

Father, we do not understand the whole road yet. Thank You for not requiring us to. The ability to keep walking is itself Your gift. Teach us to trust Your Character above our clarity. Amen.
