When Quiet Speaks

"...In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." - Job 12:10 NIV
Have you ever watched a flock of birds move across the sky and felt everything in you go quiet for just a second? Most of us have been taught to look for God in the big moments, and yet here the birds are, showing up inside an otherwise ordinary day, and we stop anyway. That stillness keeps asking a question we haven't known how to answer.
There was a man named Job who, in the hardest season of his life, watched birds doing exactly what birds do. Not straining or seeking, simply being what they are, and he saw something he couldn't explain away. He wrote that every living thing exists inside a hand that holds it. "...In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." (Job 12:10) Their whole existence moves as praise, not performed but simply lived.
If Job is right, that hand is present in the same way right now. Which brings us back to that pause. What if that same quiet wasn't random at all, but a response, the kind that comes when a Presence moves close enough to be noticed?
There was a French monk named Brother Lawrence, who spent his days in a monastery kitchen in the 1600s. The work was repetitive, leaving the hands busy and his mind free to wander. He wasn't pursuing an experience. He paid attention to what was right in front of him, and in that daily rhythm he kept arriving at the same discovery. A Presence alive and available inside the ordinary. He called it the presence of God, meaning the ordinary isn't empty.
Most of us are wired to live somewhere else, yesterday or tomorrow, and the present slips past before we think to hold it. "Be still, and know that I am God," the Psalmist wrote. (Psalm 46:10) We haven't been given a reason to stay in the pause long enough before the day reclaims us. But what if staying is worth it?
The birds never left the hand that was holding them. Job said the same hand holds the breath in your lungs right now. Maybe the first step isn't belief or certainty. Maybe it's simpler. The next time everything goes quiet, let it hold you a moment. Stay a little longer. See where the quiet points.
That willingness to stay is where our journey begins, not where it ends. That turning is the first step on an unexpected path, one that asks more of us as it goes and gives back more than we knew to look for. Come and see.
Prayer
Lord, for those of us still wondering what the quiet means, give us courage to stay a little longer. For all walking with You now, give us grace to keep returning. Teach us to pay attention. We trust You with every breath. Amen.
