When God’s Goodness Draws Near

"I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." — Psalm 27:13

These words are not wishful thinking. They were written by someone who knew trouble and delay and still believed God’s goodness would step into ordinary days.

Because of that, the Bible does more than tell us that God comforts us. It shows Him changing stories. "You turned my mourning into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy" (Psalm 30:11). Grief is not only softened; it is given a new ending. The same psalm says, "Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning" (Psalm 30:5). The God who walks with us in the middle of the night is also able, in His time, to bring the morning in ways we could never arrange.

God’s work is not only about changing what is around us. While time passes, He is also reshaping the life that will one day step into what He intends to give. Along the way, certain thoughts rise to the surface—“God has forgotten me,” “it must happen my way.” When what we hoped for is delayed or looks different, we can begin to treat God as if He has gone back on His word. The Bible speaks into that fear: "God is not a man that He should lie… Has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it?" (Numbers 23:19). His unchanging character, not our ideas about how things should look, is what we can safely stand on.

Seen this way, God’s timing looks less like reluctance and more like careful wisdom. A builder does not open a bridge just because the top looks finished; he waits until the supports can hold the weight. In the same way, God is preparing both the road in front of you and the heart that will walk it. When you find yourself asking, “Why hasn’t this changed yet?”, you can pray, “Lord, shape me to be ready for what You are preparing, and steady me to carry it when it comes,” and thank Him that He is preparing you and what lies ahead at the same time.

You do not have to measure how “ready” you are or guess when everything will turn. Bring one unfinished place to God and name it honestly. When the old line—“You have forgotten me”—starts to play, answer it with a truer one: “You see me. You do not lie. You are still at work, and what You have prepared will come at the right time.” That is where you stand: seen, held, and guarded by a goodness that will not come too late or too soon.

Prayer

Lord, all that You are preparing before me, and all You are still forming within me, I place in Your hands. Free me from the stories I have written for myself, and make me ready to receive what truly comes from You.
