When God Pulls You Forward

"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal..." — Philippians 3:13–14
When God pulls you forward, He is continuing His work in you and inviting you to walk further with Him. Sometimes His work outgrows your current patterns, roles, or routines. You begin to recognize that remaining where you are—spiritually, relationally, or in how you offer your life to Him—no longer fits what He is asking. The outside may still look familiar, but inside you know He is calling you deeper.
That inner tug is not a command to erase the past; it is a call to stop finding your footing inside it. Paul describes this posture: "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal" (Philippians 3:13–14, NIV). His aim is not that you stay as you are, but that you keep walking with Him into the next place where He is asking for your “yes.” Because of that, you can thank God for what was good without fearing that this is as far as His work in you will go. Scripture reminds you, "For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come." — Hebrews 13:14 (NIV). Let gratitude bless what has been; let obedience follow Him into what is still ahead.
That forward pull can arrive in many ways. For some, it comes through loss or disruption that you did not choose. For others, it comes through new opportunity, holy restlessness, or a quiet desire to serve beyond familiar rhythms. However it comes, He is not dismissing what once mattered—He is drawing you toward what He still intends to do. The psalmist writes, "Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy." — Psalm 126:5 (NIV). You may step into the next thing with ache or uncertainty, but you can still answer Him. You may not feel ready—but you can be willing.
Because that kind of step can feel costly, God anchors it in His presence, not your strength. When Joshua was called to lead God’s people into places he had not yet walked, the Lord said, "The LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9 (NIV). The promise was not, “You will feel brave,” but, “I will be with you.” Your confidence is not in how prepared you feel—it is in the One who goes with you as you obey.
So if you sense that God is pulling you forward—into clearer obedience, a different use of your gifts, or a deeper surrender of your time and influence—bring it to Him honestly. Name what would need to be released. Thank Him for how He has used it so far, and place it in His hands instead of holding it in yours. Ask Him for one faithful step, not a complete map. Then take that step with Him, even if your heart holds both reluctance and hope. What you entrust to Him in obedience is never wasted—He sees it, and in His time He will bring fruit from it.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me an undivided heart as I follow You. Show me where You are pulling me forward, and give me courage for the “yes” You are asking of me. Help me release what I cannot stay inside of anymore and walk with You into what is still ahead. Amen.
