The Work Before It Shows

“...he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 1:6 NIV

If you have ever watched a painter finish a room, you know the moment the work reveals itself. All the filling, the sanding, the primer no one sees, and then the color goes on and the room becomes the thing it was always meant to be. Nothing in the prep stages told you it would look like this. What you see was made entirely by what you never saw.

That is what God’s forming looks like in a life. What no one prepares you for is the astonishment of it. Not because you doubted Him, but because what He designs always exceeds what we could have imagined watching from the sanding stage.

We have been reading the evidence wrong. A biblical figure named Job knew what it was to face a season where all the evidence said ruin. He couldn’t see what God was doing, but he knew the one doing it. He wrote, “...when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold,” Job 23:10. That is not confidence in outcomes. It is confidence that the one doing the testing knows exactly what He is making.

Think about Joseph, a figure in the Bible, sold by his brothers, imprisoned, left in a cell to be forgotten. Every visible thing about those years said the story was over. When God raised him from that cell to second-in-command of a nation, he stood before those brothers and said, “...you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good,” Genesis 50:20. He was not surprised that God had been faithful. What left him speechless was that God had been at work in every one of those years.

Joseph is not an exception. The apostle Paul, writing from his own cell, looked at people he had watched God work in and wrote, “...I am confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion,” Philippians 1:6. Paul isn’t hoping. He writes from what he has seen God do, and that has made him certain. He does not begin what He does not intend to complete, and He began this in you.

You are being formed toward a moment you cannot yet picture. He knows exactly what He is building toward. The forming He is doing in you now is determining the quality of what He will one day bring to light. When that day comes, it will be more than you imagined during the filling and the sanding. Come and see.

Prayer

Father, we have been watching the wall for signs and calling the silence unfinished. Forgive the measuring that has made us smaller than the work You are doing. You know what You are building. Teach us to trust the Designer more than the design, and to rest in a confidence that was always Yours before it became ours. Amen.
