The Wisdom You Didn't Study For

"...they will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green." - Psalm 92:14 NIV
You are sitting across from someone you love, and you are about to say the thing you have been holding for too long. You should have said it sooner, and the silence has cost you both. But you also remember what it felt like when someone told you a hard truth without caring how it landed. You stopped listening, and the relationship never fully came back. So you sit here choosing your words the way only someone who knows what careless ones cost would choose them.
What is running through your mind while you speak is a checklist the years wrote into you. James gave it a name, "...the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit," James 3:17. Am I being honest or am I manipulating? Am I preserving peace or just avoiding the hard part? Do I actually want restoration, or do I want to be right? You ask yourself those questions between sentences, and the fact that you are asking them at all is the evidence that something has changed in you.
A Roman centurion once sent word to Jesus asking Him to heal a servant. He did not demand proof or credentials. He said, "...say the word, and my servant will be healed," Luke 7:7. Jesus marveled because the man recognized what he was seeing. He knew authority because he had lived under it, and so had Jesus. That kind of knowing cannot be taught. Are you doing the same thing at this table, not speaking from a book but from what the years built in you? "...a good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of," Luke 6:45.
The psalmist saw what a life full of that stored-up good looks like at the end, "...they will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, the Lord is upright, He is my Rock," Psalm 92:14-15. That fruitfulness does not prove you have everything right. It proves that the One who held you was faithful even when you were not. The person sitting across from you can feel the difference. What they are hearing is not advice but the weight of someone who paid for every word.
You do not know if this conversation will heal what silence broke. But you spoke the truth the way mercy taught you, and the person across from you is still listening. That is the harvest, and it is still growing. Come and see.
Prayer
Father, form in us the kind of wisdom that cannot be rushed or rehearsed. Teach us to speak truth without wounding, and let what comes out of us be shaped by Your mercy and love. Amen.
