The Thing That Didn't Hold

"I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me." - Ecclesiastes 2:18 (NIV)
You open a drawer and find something you wrote years ago. Plans, goals, a direction you built with real effort. You remember what it cost. But your hand does not reach for a pen to update the list. You set the page back in the drawer and close it. The plans were not wrong. Some of them worked. You expected to feel more, and you did not, and that is the part you cannot explain.
Solomon, a king who had tested wisdom, wealth, work, and pleasure to their limits and built a life few could rival, put it bluntly: "I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?" Ecclesiastes 2:18-19 (NIV). He was honest about what happens when responsibility passes and pride has not caught up yet.
The writer of Hebrews describes it this way: "...the removing of what can be shaken...so that what cannot be shaken may remain," Hebrews 12:27 (NIV). You hold something steady for years, and one morning your hands are not wrapped around it the same way. You did not pry your fingers loose. They opened on their own, the way a hand relaxes in sleep. The footing beneath everything you built had not moved.
Through the prophet Haggai, God spoke to a people rebuilding from bare ground: "The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house," Haggai 2:9 (NIV). That promise does not ask you to forget those years. They were scaffolding. Real scaffolding bears real weight. But it was never meant to be the last thing standing.
Paul had built his standing on credentials no one could question, and he did not say those things collapsed. He counted them as loss "because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord," Philippians 3:8 (NIV). What he had spent years defending lost its hold on him because something worth more took its place. For "no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ," 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NIV).
Bring this into today. The dinner table where someone mentions a role you used to hold, and you let the conversation move on. The colleague who now leads what you built, and you find yourself hoping they build it further. The child who chose a path you did not map, and your chest does not tighten the way it once did. You are standing on ground that no longer needs your effort to hold it. It did not fail. It finished.
Now go.
Prayer
Lord, we carried things for years that You were quietly completing. Thank You that nothing faithful was wasted. Loosen our grip where holding has become habit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
