The Lord Will Fight for You

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." - Exodus 14:14

Life brings challenges, decisions to make, relationships and work to navigate. But in all of it, something keeps drawing us to trust, to trust something beyond ourselves. When things don't play out like we hoped, the lies start running, "we're on our own, there's nothing there." In that kind of stillness though, there's this phrase that keeps coming up, "the truth will set you free," showing us what's real. Israel felt it too and faced the same lies.

In that ancient story, Israel, God's people, follows the pillar of cloud out of Egypt and ends up at the Red Sea with Pharaoh's army approaching. They did what God asked. Now they are trapped with no way forward. They panic. "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?" (Exodus 14:11). "Maybe following God was a mistake. Maybe this is punishment for everything done wrong. Maybe there's no real power here and it was just luck." The same lies echo for us.

We know this place. Things God's way feel harder than expected. The obedience that should bring clarity brings questions. The enemy whispers, "You heard wrong. You should have stayed where you were." Israel's leader Moses speaks truth. "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still" (Exodus 14:13-14).

Finding that stillness is how we stop believing lies and start discovering who God actually is. Our instinct when pressure builds is to manage, calculate, control. "Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe" (Proverbs 28:26). It is easier to believe we are responsible for everything than to trust God fights for us.

God drove the sea back all night. Israel walks through on dry ground, walls of water on both sides. "The Lord...threw [the Egyptian army] into confusion" (Exodus 14:24). The threat gets swallowed. They stood still and God fought. Their impossibility opened. Ours can too.

This is what happens when we stop and let God work. God fighting for us does not always mean removing what we are facing. They are heading into wilderness, not a resort. Each moment carries His presence and what's needed. We are finding Him here, trusting Him with what's ahead.

God's power becomes real when we stop managing and let Him fight. His strength becomes what we live from. In that stillness, an invitation opens to become His people, moving in power we don't possess, facing what we couldn't on our own. That's the gift.

Prayer

Father, when the lies start running, help us find that stillness. Help us see You're fighting for us. Open our eyes to who we are as Your people. Teach us to trust Your strength instead of managing everything ourselves. Amen.
