The Honest Word

"...I will follow you wherever you go." - Luke 9:57

Have you ever caught yourself finally saying the thing you’ve been avoiding? Not dressing it up, just saying it. We label it stress until one morning we hear ourselves admit we’re afraid. We say the relationship is just in a rough season until we finally say our marriage is in trouble. We call it being tired until we name it depression. We stay busy until a friend asks the right question and we just stop. The labels felt safer. The honest word feels different. That’s where this begins.

In the ancient world, naming wasn’t a filing exercise. It was a declaration of what we were no longer willing to pretend wasn’t true. When God brought the creatures to Adam, it wasn’t cataloguing. It was standing before each one and saying what it actually was, "...whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name." Genesis 2:19. That kind of honesty changes our relationship to the thing the moment we say it.

In Luke 9, three people tell Jesus they want to follow Him. The first, "...I will follow you wherever you go." Luke 9:57. Jesus names what the road looks like, "...foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Luke 9:58. A second says yes but needs to attend to his father first. A third wants to say goodbye to his family. Three genuine intentions. Three unnamed claims pulling in the other direction.

Jesus doesn’t argue. He surfaces what’s already there. To the second, "...Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Luke 9:60. To the third, "...No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:62. He isn’t being harsh. He’s refusing to let the but stay unspoken. The yes was real. So was what was quietly competing with it.

The honest word doesn’t create the problem. It stops the pretending. Naming is never just our move toward God. Job discovered He was already moving toward us, longing for the creature He made, "...you will long for the creature you have made." Job 14:15. The honest word we finally say turns out to be an answer to a call that was already there.

What gets said out loud can finally be walked toward. The thing we kept circling is now on the road in front of us. We don’t have to arrive with anything figured out. We just have to say the true thing and take one step.

Prayer

Lord, You already know what we’ve been calling it. Give us courage to say the true thing. Not because You need to hear it, but because we do. Meet us in that honesty and show us the road that opens from there. Amen.
