The Child Given to Us and the Life We Long For

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Life can be full and outwardly settled, yet inside there can still be a quiet sense that something more is possible—a deeper way to live than simply getting through tasks, solving problems, and reaching the next goal. Isaiah's promise speaks into that hidden place. He does not tell us to push harder, but describes a different rule over the inner life, resting not on our shoulders but on the One given "to us." His four names are not just religious titles. They are four ways God reshapes the heart from the inside out.

Wonderful Counsellor speaks to how we think about our lives. Over time, certain ideas can feel unchangeable simply because we have had them for so long: "This is just who I am. This is just how life works for me." Isaiah says there is a wiser voice than our old patterns. Scripture promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you" (James 1:5). This wisdom does not crush us. It slowly shows where our stories about ourselves are too small or too defensive and invites us to let God's way of seeing become the reference point for our choices.

Mighty God goes deeper than saying "God is powerful." It touches the quiet belief many of us carry: "As long as I can manage my work, my image, my relationships, my faith, I am safe. If I cannot, everything may fall apart." In that way of living, even our strengths can become a kind of slavery. God speaks into this with a different word: "My power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). This is not praise for failure; it shows the cost of living as if everything depends on us. The One Isaiah calls Mighty God is the One before whom we can finally lay down the silent promise to hold the world together and learn to be faithful without needing to be in control of everything.

As Everlasting Father, the promised One speaks to a deeper question under both success and struggle: "Where does my life truly belong when things change?" Scripture says, "that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are" (1 John 3:1). Through Christ, this becomes more than a phrase we repeat. It becomes a new starting point for each day. Our value is no longer set and reset with every win or loss. We move through our work, relationships, and responsibilities not as people waiting for a verdict, but as those whose name has already been spoken by God.

Prince of Peace speaks into the inner "noise" many people treat as normal—thoughts jumping ahead to the next task, hearts pulled in many directions at once, a low level of tension that rarely goes away. Jesus later says, "My peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27). His peace is not just a quiet moment when nothing is happening. It is the drawing together of a scattered life under His care. It teaches us to stand in the present, aware that we are not carrying it alone, and slowly loosens the fear that everything depends on our grip.

Isaiah 9:6 is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and it keeps working itself out in the lives of those who sense there must be more than self-guided wisdom, self-made strength, self-earned worth, and self-managed calm. These names tell us who He is, but they also describe who we can slowly become as His leadership takes its place over our inner world.

Prayer

Lord, You see the parts of me that quietly want a deeper way of living, even when I do not know how to say it. Let Your wisdom question and reshape my usual ways of thinking. Let Your strength release me from trying to hold everything together by myself. Let Your faithful love settle my sense of who I am, so I do not live as if I am always being tested. Let Your peace gather the scattered pieces of my heart into trust. Lead me into the life You planned long before I knew how to ask for it. Amen.
