More Than Knowing He Loves You

"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us..." (1 John 4:16, NIV)

You know how a normal day can begin with almost no drama at all? You answer two messages, make a list, check the calendar, get something done, enjoy a good conversation, look forward to supper, or feel pleased that a plan is working. None of those things is bad. They are part of an ordinary human day. But somewhere in the middle of them, one good thing can begin to occupy more space in you than it should. A finished task can settle you. A comfortable plan can start shaping your choices. The sense that life is going well can quietly become enough for you.

John, one of Jesus' closest disciples, is speaking to a day like that. The issue is not whether we can repeat the right words from memorized Scripture. The issue is what we are depending on as the day moves along. A kind conversation may brighten the hour, and that is fine. A plan coming together may bring relief. A good result at work may encourage you. But if those things begin deciding whether you are settled, guided, or all right, they are carrying more than they were ever meant to carry.

Maybe that is where his words become more searching. "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us..." Not only know it. Rely on it. Not only agree that it is true, but come back to it as the day moves on. "Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them" (1 John 4:16). John is reminding us where life is actually found, so that even good things stay in their place and hard things do not get the final word.

And the same is true when something hard enters the day. "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear" (1 John 4:18). Fear does not always announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it simply looks like the need to control what happens next, protect your image, keep your comfort, or prove that you are still doing fine. John is talking about the love of God. It does not leave you alone with those reactions. It keeps drawing you back when success starts carrying you away or fear starts closing you in.

"We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). His love was already there before the good thing and before the hard thing, before the praise and before the pressure, before you remembered to turn toward Him. So maybe we can know and rely on the love God has for us without letting good things become our center or hard things define us. Love here is not sentiment. It is His presence here and now, the One who "first loved us."

Prayer

Jesus, when good things start pulling me away or hard things start closing in, draw me back. Teach me to rely on Your love today, and keep me close enough to hear and follow You. Amen.
