Building Others Up From the Inside Out

“Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up.” (Romans 15:2, NIV)

Paul is not asking you to become endlessly “nice” or agreeable; he is inviting you into the pattern of Christ. To “please” your neighbor here means to willingly adjust your preferences so that someone else is strengthened in God. It is costly love, not soft enablement. Jesus Himself “did not please himself” but stepped into our place so that “the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me” (Romans 15:3). He absorbed the weight of sin and rejection so that you could live from a secure, loved place instead of constantly protecting yourself.

From that security, Scripture goes to work inside you: “everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope” (Romans 15:4). As you stay with God’s Word, you are not just learning facts; you are being trained to endure when relationships are tiring and to receive fresh courage when you feel misunderstood. The stories of God’s faithfulness become the inner scaffolding that holds you when love feels heavy.

Into that space, Paul prays: “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had” (Romans 15:5). This is deeper than trying harder. God Himself is reshaping your attitude of mind—how you see that slow, demanding, or difficult person—so that your responses begin to resemble Christ’s patience and self-giving love. And as this happens in you and in others, your shared life becomes a kind of worship: “so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:6). Quiet, costly choices to build someone up today become part of a larger song of glory to God.

Prayer

Father, God who gives endurance and encouragement, thank You that Jesus did not live to please Himself but gave Himself for my good. Let the truth of Your Word sink deep enough to form real endurance and real hope in me. Today, give me the attitude of mind that Christ has toward the people around me. Show me one specific way to lay down my preference so that someone else is built up in You. Let my hidden choices of love join with others as one mind and one voice that glorify You.
