Believe in Me

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." (John 14:1, NIV)

Every day we place our trust in someone. Sometimes it's a doctor with a diagnosis we don't fully understand. Sometimes it's a friend we've confided in. Sometimes it's the person we're thinking about spending the rest of our life with. At some point, facts stop taking us any farther. We quietly find ourselves asking, "Is this person worthy of my trust?" We answer because, little by little, we have come to know their character. Facts may introduce us, but trust is what deepens a relationship.

That's what makes Jesus' words so surprising. It is the night before the cross. His friends don't understand what is about to happen, and honestly, neither would we. Yet Jesus doesn't begin by explaining any of it. He simply says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me" (John 14:1, NIV). He isn't asking them to understand everything. He's asking them to trust Him before they understand everything. He offers Himself before He offers explanations.

Thomas asks the question most of us would have asked: "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" (John 14:5, NIV). Jesus doesn't hand him a map. He answers, "I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6, NIV). Believing about Jesus and believing in Jesus are not quite the same. It's the difference between admiring a bridge and stepping onto it. He doesn't simply know the way forward. He is the Way. We begin to believe in Him as we discover that He is worthy of the weight we're learning to place upon Him.

Then Jesus says something even more personal: "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18, NIV). That sounds less like a lesson and more like a promise made between friends. Trust grows that way, not all at once, but as someone proves faithful and we remember it. His mercies are "new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22-23, NIV). Sometimes we notice those mercies in a verse that opens at the right moment, an unexpected kindness, or peace that arrives before the answers do. Each remembered mercy gives us another reason to trust Him with what we still cannot see.

Tomorrow morning, some prayers may still be unanswered and the road ahead may still be unclear. I will probably wake up with a few unanswered questions too. But Jesus will not have changed overnight. Maybe that is what believing in Him looks like when life has not explained itself. We do not pretend to understand. We do not force an answer. We simply choose not to walk away from the One who has stayed with us. We place our hand in His again and quietly say, "Lord, I'm still here. I'm choosing to stay. And I believe You're still here."

Prayer

Lord Jesus, when my heart is troubled and the road ahead is unclear, help me remember Your faithfulness, trust You before I understand, and keep choosing to stay with You. Amen.
