Being Formed While You Work

"Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him" - Proverbs 8:30

A craftsman looks at raw material and sees what it will become. The woodworker runs his hand over rough board and sees the finished piece: the grain that will show, the shape that's hidden in there. That vision brings them joy as they work. They delight in every cut, every pass with the sandpaper, every adjustment, all of it focused on what they're making.

Maybe that's how He's shaping us. Paul, who taught early Christians about faith, says 'our pressures will develop in us patient endurance,' and patient endurance refines our character, proven character leads back to hope, and this hope isn't disappointing fantasy because God's love keeps cascading into our hearts (Romans 5:3-5, TPT). The progression is happening now while we can't see what's being built. But what if God sees the finished work? What if He's working with the joy of someone making something beautiful, even while we're still rough and unfinished?

It's hard to sense His delight in this work when the trials obscure our vision and the pressure makes the work feel grim, like we're barely holding on. We start wondering if we're trying His patience, if our slowness frustrates Him, if we're disappointing Him. But what if there's more happening than we can detect? There's an ancient account about Elisha, a prophet and spiritual leader in Israel, whose servant woke up terrified one morning. Enemy armies had surrounded their city during the night. But Elisha prayed for the Lord to 'open his eyes and let him see,' and suddenly the servant saw what had been there all along: the hillside filled with horses and chariots of fire, God's protection surrounding the threat (2 Kings 6:16-17, NLT). The protection was always there. He just couldn't see it. What if that's what Jesus meant when he said, 'You are about to see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of God, the Almighty' (Matthew 26:64, TPT)? Maybe revelation is coming. Maybe what's been true all along will become visible.

This is what we'll see. He's been delighting in this work all along. Ancient wisdom writings show us Wisdom, 'close to the Creator's side as his master artist. Daily he was filled with delight in me as I playfully rejoiced before him. I laughed and played, so happy with what he had made, while finding my delight in the children of men' (Proverbs 8:30-31, TPT). Not grim duty. Not frustrated correction. Delight. Joy. The same pleasure that craftsman brings to beloved work. That's how He's forming us right now. He sees what we're becoming, and that vision brings Him joy.

It's hard to hold onto that truth when the pressure feels so real, when our slowness feels like failure, when the fog feels impenetrable. But what if none of that changes His delight in what He's creating? One day we'll see not just that it made sense, but that He was rejoicing over this work the whole time we thought we were disappointing Him. Until then, we get to trust His delighted hand. The work that feels laborious to us? He's making something beautiful, and that's bringing Him joy. That's the gift.

Prayer

Father, when the pressure feels grim and our progress feels slow, remind us You're working with delight. You're not frustrated by this work. You're rejoicing in what we're becoming. Teach us to trust Your joyful hand shaping what we can't yet see. Thank You for finding pleasure in this work. Amen.
