Before Anyone Needs

"Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4 NIV)

We want to live aligned with God. But there are times when the path we're on feels like it's drifting from the one He would choose, and the question isn't whether we should live aligned with God. It's how can we possibly do so, do we try harder? Or is it asking Him for what we need. We notice that life comes from recognizing His voice, clarity often comes from the time before the day demands anything, and asking connects us to the One who hears.

The wilderness story gives us a picture. Jesus had been fasting for forty days when the tempter came saying, "Turn stones into bread. Test God. Worship what would serve you." Jesus answered every time with Scripture, pointing to God's way. "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4 NIV). Maybe we're meant to notice that life doesn't come from provision alone, or from our plans, or our strategies. It comes from whatever God speaks. His word creates, guides, and sustains. So when the path feels unclear, maybe we're not meant to try harder. Maybe we're meant to linger in His word and let that lead us into the next moment.

That same dependence shows up in Jesus' life. Very early, while it was still dark, He left and went to a solitary place to pray. When His disciples found Him, He knew where to go. "Let us go somewhere else… so I can preach there also. That is why I have come" (Mark 1:38 NIV). He sought that clarity in the solitude, before the day began. Our next steps can flow from that time alone with God. But how do we navigate that time alone with Him in His word?

Maybe we spend that time the way the psalmist did. He didn't strategize. When the need arises, he pleads, "Rescue me from the young lions" (Psalm 35:17 NET). For us, those lions might be things like doubt, fatigue, impatience, or the slow erosion of vision. "Rouse yourself, wake up and vindicate me" (Psalm 35:23 NET). Vindication was God's to give. We can't defeat the lions alone. Asking connects us to the One who can. So we ask. When do we go before Him? Jesus showed us. He went to His Father before anyone needed Him. The invitation is to do the same. To go. To linger in His word before the day begins. We ask Him for what we need, for clarity and insight into unseen situations.

This word holds everything. "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4 NIV). Augustine wrote, "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in You." The One who spoke it is still speaking. He sees our hearts. Still near. The invitation stands. That's the gift.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the word that speaks life. Thank You for the rest I find when I linger with You. I am grateful for what You reveal. I am willing to receive what You give. Amen.
