A Word That Gets You Moving

Tuesday, January 27, 2026

"Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."" — John 5:8

We make plans—career paths, finances, health, relationships. Most of the time, steady effort works: we choose a direction, adjust as we go, and keep moving. But some stretches simply take longer than we expected. The calendar slips, doors open slowly, and progress feels quiet. So we keep showing up—refining the plan, staying engaged, and trusting that faithfulness counts, even before we can see the result.

At some point, something quieter happens. We’re not just moving forward—we’re trying to manage what hasn’t settled yet, hoping the next adjustment finally makes the outcome move.

That’s where renewal becomes concrete. Not a better plan, but restored movement where things have stalled. When we don’t know what to do, a simple prayer helps. “Teach me to do your will… may your good Spirit lead me on level ground” (Psalm 143:10). And when the problem feels bigger than our reach, “Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).

In John 5, Jesus comes to a man who has been unable to walk for a long time—someone who has spent years trying to catch the moment that might change everything, only to be beaten to it again and again. In a setting where everything hangs on timing—“…while I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me” (John 5:7)—Jesus doesn’t ask him to reposition or wait for better timing. He gives a direct command. “Get up. Pick up your mat and walk.” The man responds, and his condition changes. The story turns on a simple pivot. Renewal isn’t a better angle—it’s movement restored by a clear word and a real response. The man’s story turns when Jesus replaces “if the moment breaks right” with “take the step in front of you.”

Jesus met a man by the pool who had been unable to walk for years, and that healing doesn’t resolve every part of his life. It changes one thing. He stops waiting for the moment to break his way and responds to a word spoken directly to him. That is enough to get him moving. And for a day that still feels unfinished, that is enough to hold.

He wasn’t looking for a dramatic moment. Jesus met him where he was, and spoke. We ask for the same nearness in our unfinished places. “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)

Prayer

Lord Jesus, show me what You want me to do today. Quiet the part of me that keeps scanning for the perfect moment, and steady my hands for simple obedience. When the path tightens and the pressure rises, keep me from backing away. Give me a willing heart, clear sight, and the courage to move with You in steady faithfulness. Amen.
