A Small Thing Stirred You

"Were not our hearts burning within us...?" - Luke 24:32
Strike a tuning fork in a quiet room, and something strange happens nearby. A second fork, untouched on the other side of the table, begins to hum on its own. It was built for that exact frequency. Touch it, and the hum runs quietly from somewhere, up your own fingers. It did not make the sound, and it could not stay silent when the sound arrived.
Something small stirred you this week, and you couldn't say why. A line in a song at a stoplight, a sentence on a page you've already read, an ordinary word from a stranger that stayed longer than it should have. The reaction was out of scale with the moment, and you tried to move on but couldn't. Luke tells of two travelers on the Emmaus road who walked for hours beside a stranger and only afterward said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road...?" The burning came before the knowing. Their hearts recognized Him before their eyes did.
This is how Jesus described His own. "My sheep listen to My voice," He said, "I know them, and they follow Me" (John 10:27). The listening is the shape we were given. What hummed in you was not sentiment, and it was not overreaction. Something in you was built to answer it. The small moment did not feel small at all. It was the frequency your inner self was made for, arriving without warning.
And this is what we are starting to notice. The humming is not the whole of it. Young Samuel heard his name called in the dark and did not know whose voice it was, but he kept answering. "Speak, for Your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:10). Each answer tuned him further. What looks like a single small answer in our week is actually another alignment, a quiet adjustment of a life being drawn into harmony with the One who struck the note. "He has set eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). That's why the hum arrives and stays.
You are not a fork that rang once and went quiet. You are a life being brought, small moment by small moment, into tune. The humming was real. The harmony is real too, and it is arriving. "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6).
Stay with this.
Prayer
Father, thank You that the small answers within us are not overreactions but further tuning. Thank You that we were made to hum when Your voice strikes near, and that each humming draws us deeper. Bring us fully into the harmony You have begun. Amen.
